Cetera Algorithm

New sound algorithm to create 3d effects in sound. You are femiliar with sterio, 5.1 surround etc things. But hear this mp3 using your head phones (head phone is a must) http://juneja.info/binaural/v-i-r-t-u-a-l-_-b-a.mp3

From this mp3 , you will get the feeling of a barber shop, and you are setting on the chair. If this mp3 makes you crazy ,it is nothing but cetera algorithm.

Starkey’s Cetera technology makes the hearing aid “invisible” to the brain. Cetera removes the barrier between sound and the brain’s ability to process signals. The Cetera technology is based on an innovative new algorithm- the complex mathematical formula that drives a hearing aid. Cetera’s algorithm can match the exact characteristics of the wearer’s ear. This customization removes the barrier that most hearing aids erect between the incoming sound waves and the data sent to the brain for processing.

Here is the full dialogs of this virtual barber shop:

Manuel - Hello there!Hello there! How are you?Yes, yes…You are here for the virtual haircut? yes, yes…ok… I will go and get Luigi. He will come and cut your hair… I’m Manuel, just stay right there.
Manuel – Luigi? (knock-knock) Oh Luigi? he’s present here for your virtual haircut. You’d better come up…..
LuigiGrazie* Manuel, I’m coming right now.

Manuel – He’s coming up right now and me I’ll go over here and play music, play the guittar because that’s what I do here at the barbershop.

Luigi - Ah, it’s so nice to see you.Welcome to the Starkey Cetera Barbershop and our virtual haircut. I’d like to start the demonstration by moving over to your right hand side and picking up this bag. If you just hold still for a second I’ll put this bag over your head! Just like that..The bag over the top of the head…

And now, I’ll take the bag off. There we go.

The only reason I did that it’s because all of the fancy barbershop do that.

What you’re listening to is I move to your right here and very quickly wash my hands

Trimmmm-Trimmm (the phone is ring) Manuueeellll could you get that please? Oh, thank you Manuel. Let me finish washing my hands here… just bear with a few more seconds.
Ah, yes… As I was saying, all we are doing is using your head as the listening point… and we have two microphones one on either side of the head, in the same position as where your left and your right ears are.

Your brain is doing all of the work, telling you where the sounds are coming from… ok…I’ll go and get the scissors… Nice sharp

And now as I begin the clipping and I bring the clip close to your ear, very close to the right ear…folow me as I move around the back of the head… to the left ear…and up over the top of the head…okay. Now, you can get the same effect better with the eletric razer, I’ll first bring it to your right ear…And around the back… and on your left. I think that looks wonderful. Manuel, what do you think?

Manuel – Ah? Yes..Ah, yes…It looks wonderful Luigi! You do such nice work

Luigi – Oh, thank you so much Manuel.

Manuel – So fast too.

Luigi - Now, as I walk around I just want to tell you only once more that your ability to hear where I am as I walk around the room is simply the amazing power of your brain, calculating the tinny differences or cues in sound intensity and arrival time from two open ears and unlike any other hearing instrument, only one has the digital algorithm that negates on physical presence in the ear to fully restore those differences.
And that algorithm is called… CETERA.

Oh, thank you, thank you so much for stopping by the Starkey Virtual barbershop

Good bye and arrivederte*

Okay … Some more virtual mp3s

Wow! That was one of the coolest things I have heard. But you need a good headset to appreciate it.

I have been studing sound for a long time. Many different people and groups have come up with several solutions to trying to make sound play back as accurate as possible. This algorithm and process has to be the best I have heard yet. I hope that we will start to see this used in many commercial products.

    Hi,
I am a student working on Binaural Audio Processing.
Virtual Barber clip was a good way to explain Binaural hearing.
I want to learn more on Cetera Algorithm.
Hoping to hear from you :)

  20. alexandroid August 20, 2008 at 11:41 pm #

Very interesting, but what’s new here? I’d think you just use a set of special microphones (two?) to record and then play them in separate stereo channels. Maybe the trick is to use digital processing to enhance the stereo effect? Or use some sort of directional microphones…

The article on audiology online is dated by 1999. And I think this must be exactly what is used in 5.1 and similar systems.

Anyway, the sound examples are astonishing! I had to look back before I realized the sound comes from the headphones! =)

  21. naum August 22, 2008 at 5:55 pm #

  23. Miya_Mya August 28, 2008 at 10:53 pm #

It is awesome.. It is so like real. Who did the work? I’m dying to know.. Kudos!

  24. NaN September 21, 2008 at 5:33 am #

Hi, from what i saw, you record to a single file both the signals from left and right microphone to according trak (left and right) I just dont understand where you implement the algorithm. The quality of the sound is due to the type of mic you use, and the timings of the sound are there already. The only “thing” different is you used an human ear and a not very small room, right? Please get back to me with this!
Never the less, great job! Loved it!

  25. ryan October 18, 2008 at 10:06 am #

get this to the tv, video games, EVERYTHING. I don’t care if i need to where headphones this blows dolby 7.1 out the window and I don’t have to buy expencive equipment. this might also save us from having to change digital audio formats cause people want more than just sterio, mp3 works great with this. keep it up make it known get it out there and use bluetooth headphones to do it.

  26. Pablo October 19, 2008 at 2:09 am #

Thanks for naming an algorithm after me!
This is really awesome just because I felt like I was really at a barber shop. I pinpoint the location of every sound I heard, to the point where I thought you were about to cut my ears off.

  61. Mr. Sims November 12, 2009 at 4:31 am #

I can’t believe this hasn’t caught on yet! it’s 1000 times better than surround and at a fraction of the cost.

    • Gaia October 15, 2011 at 12:05 pm #

Is this for sale somewhere…you say at a fraction of cost of surround sound so where did you buy it? email me at iam.gaiasback.happy@gmail.com . Thx.

  62. Paul Miller November 18, 2009 at 9:51 am #

Thank you so much for making this publicly available. Apart from being brilliant clever, it was so real I was really shocked. Well done. I hope the technology spreads. It would be phenomenal for audio books and drama.
I am sure that it will revolutionise the way that deaf people use aids, and probably be much appreciated by blind people too, as well as those of us who are fortunate to have our senses.

  63. ivo dias November 26, 2009 at 5:35 pm #

very interesting …. this technology could be applied also in the MP4 movies.

  64. Saurabh November 30, 2009 at 12:55 pm #

  65. recording guy December 6, 2009 at 9:55 pm #

Umm…. this needs an algorithm? “Binaural recording” with two microphones on either side of a “fake” head does this without an algorithm.

    • Sajith M.R December 7, 2009 at 1:08 pm #

      Hey Recording guy,

Please create one and post the link here, so that lots of people interested in that.

    Hello!

I need urgently information about the Data of the VIRTUAL BARBER! Could it be used free in our acoustic institute or is it licenced? Do somebody has the name of the person who got the licence for the data?
Our institute is called: European Research and Education Center for the Sustainable Development of Acoustic Space and was created in the context of Linz2009, European Capital of Culture.
    More under: http://www.hoerstadt.at/the_akustikon/the_akustikon.html)

Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
    Best greatings from snowy Austria

  68. Christian Hess December 26, 2009 at 9:51 pm #

Wow! That was awesome! my mom got me a latte espresso (portable mp3/wma player), and it had that virtual barber shop on it. i listened to it so many times. i was wondering if there is anything else like it.

  69. Drags January 2, 2010 at 6:35 pm #

What can I say. It is a revolution. I am ultimately excited while and after listening any of demo mp3′s. I want this algorithm at large. Games, movies, phone calls, whatever…It is just awesome. Perfect. Thanks.

  70. Iron Bug January 24, 2010 at 1:35 am #

I’m curious whether the algorithm is proprietary or under some free license? I would be glad to try it, since I’m a professional programmer and also play music. But I deal with open source platform and so that would only work if the algo is under GPL or so… Where I could find more info about it?

  71. Ramthai February 18, 2010 at 12:23 am #

They need to do this with porn….

  75. socal frank March 21, 2010 at 10:19 pm #

On my system the surround effect only works for left – right – and rear. I don’t hear anything coming from the front perspective. It would need to be full 360, especially in the front, to be useful for theatrical applications.

I work in motion picture sound and listened to the mp3 with excellent headphones.

  99. Ishai October 4, 2012 at 6:13 pm #

    Wow!
I can only look forward to the new audio book recordings in 3D! It might be even better than a movie!
Good job. now how can I record my guitar and singing to sound like this?

  100. Orlando February 28, 2013 at 4:27 pm #

Is it me or all that’s required is a mic and a pretty good sound board that’ll pan and go up and down… Last I heard an algorithim is a mathematical calculation that in this case applied to a hearing aid can offer as good a sound as the natural hearing cavity. So, I suppose there will be no noble prize for discovering “america’ once more.
